The White House: 5 rules for a monochrome interior

White interiors came into fashion as soon as the amount of time spent cleaning them became acceptable. Although the installation of “white walls equals a hospital” still remained in some heads, the invention of a vacuum cleaner, a hard sponge and Domestos, as well as a total love for Scandinavia, made white interiors almost universal. Life around tells why white is a good solution for an apartment and how to make such an interior yourself.

What is good in a white interior

To begin with, we’ll figure out what attracts everyone to white interiors and why they do not go out of fashion. Firstly, the white color reveals all the dirty places. That is why a white apartment for rent will have more confidence (of course, if it is rented to white). We know for ourselves: in bathrooms with dark tiles, sooner or later there will be a feeling that everything around is dirty, so it’s easier to care for white interiors even in moral terms.

The second important argument in favor of the white interior is the climate. With our daylight hours and hopeless clouds, we are not at all spoiled by the sun. The advantage of white is that it reflects light better than other painted surfaces, and a room with white walls will be brighter even with small windows.

Thirdly, one of the rules of a harmonious interior is the absence of sharp borders of colors: the more colorful your home, the less it seems. Therefore, snow-white interiors look endless.

Fourthly, white is an ideal background for paintings and other trifles. And this is why you can’t not love white. Over time, any house becomes overgrown with spontaneous motley decor: a cute lilac frame from my mother, a red figurine from the journey of original friends - all these things that are sincerely dear to the owners, white shelves intelligently combine, and the space does not seem chaotic anymore.

What you need to know to assemble a white interior

In fact, from the point of view of color preference for walls, a white interior is no better than a color one: for every successful white, there is no less successful color. It's just harder to make a mistake with white. In any case, to create a white interior as in the picture, it is useful to know some pitfalls.

Smooth walls. As a rule, they do not write about this in articles on interiors, but the quality of the preparation of the walls plays an important role: flaws and cracks are clearly visible on a poorly made white wall, and the more concise the space, the more visible the defects. Therefore, the requirements for the quality of repairs should be higher for minimalist interiors. In order to get not only smooth (it depends on the masters), but also long-lived walls, after the plastering process it would be nice to cover them with reinforcing mesh, be sure to putty them, glue fiberglass on top and only then paint.

Ceiling baseboard. As a rule, the walls in our houses are reinforced concrete, and the ceilings are made of drywall. But even if the walls are made of bricks, and the ceiling is made of reinforced concrete, there is a nuance here too. The thing is the coefficient of thermal expansion, which is different for different materials. And this means that at the junction of the two materials, sooner or later there will be a crack. Therefore, be sure to make a ceiling plinth - albeit minimal, at least 2x2 centimeters. Or build walls from the same material as the ceiling.

The combination of colors. Combining colors is not so difficult. Most likely, you will not be mistaken if you follow a simple rule that is suitable for any visual task, not only for houses: 65-70% of the entire space should be filled with the base color (in our case, white), 25-30% with an additional and about 5% - accent colors, which must be necessary, otherwise it will turn out boring.

different invoices. So that the white interior does not actually turn into a hospital one, it must be filled with various textures: smooth stone, painted wood, embossed wallpaper, leather, fur and so on. Playing in the light and reflecting it in different ways, such surfaces visually fill the interior.

Furniture by RAL. White color is more complicated than it seems at first glance. If you decide to equip a room with white furniture and buy it in different places, then most likely you will quickly find that your white furniture is not so white. There are a lot of white shades: gray, yellow, blue, and there are nine degrees of gloss, and each paint manufacturer can have their own. Ideally, of course, make furniture to order and synchronize the brand of paint from different manufacturers. Advice from personal experience: if you have to order furniture, then to get the optimal white color, select the number 9016 from the RAL catalog (the color palette used by furniture makers). Compared to the rest, it is a little yellowish, but in real life it’s exactly what it should be.

Summarizing, let’s say that the white interior is definitely an intermediate stage. We, accustomed to colorful kindergartens, colorful schools and orange and lime high-rise buildings with pink elevator halls, just want balance and make our apartments calmer, as opposed to everything that surrounds the front door. One day a sense of harmony with the environment will appear, and we will begin to relate to complex colors at home.
